HP laptop suddenly dim and flickering

HP Recommended
HP Stream 11

Hi,

Around a hour ago, my laptop started to flicker and dim.  This has never happened to me before and I'm unable to get it fixed due to quarantine. I tried to troubleshoot it by uninstalling my display driver and reinstalling it to no avail.  Whenever I put my brightness to max,  the screen begins to flicker intensely and I hear a quiet buzzing noise coming from my laptop.  When I put it to one level down from the max brightness, it doesn't flicker however it flickers when I change to it after being on max brightness for a couple of seconds if that makes sense.  Does anyone have a fix to this issue?

Thank you in advance!

An additional note: after staying on the second highest level of brightness, the flickering came back

Ok so I was using my laptop to finish up some more homework and now using the max brightness setting and second to brightest setting just makes my screen really hard.  Using the third to max setting makes my monitor flicker.

@BrianRen10 When you post multiple times the time to respond to you get's delayed as the post reset's each time, posting multiple times may also send your post into the spam box, hence we don't recommend you do that!

That out of the way, here's what you need to know about resolving the issue:

  • If not done already, check if it works fine on the BIOS screen to identify if it's either a hardware or a software issue:
    • If it works fine on the BIOS (Accessed while tapping F10 during a restart) it's a software issue & I suggest creating a new user account to check if that works better, for starters)
    • However, if it doesn't work within the BIOS either, I'm afraid it's a hardware malfunction.

While you respond to that, I have a few more steps that should help:

Perform a power reset (no data loss) using these steps: Click here, proceed to next step if this works

Attempt to run a test from the HP hardware diagnostic tool, using this link: Click here for details.

If the issue appears on the diagnostics, it could again, determine a hardware failure,

If they don't appear on bios & the hardware tests passed: please update the BIOS & Chip-set drivers from the HP website using this link: Click here

if the issue persists, reinstall windows using the recovery partition or the recovery media to fix the issue,
use this link for details on performing the recovery: Click here
