HP ENVY 700-215xt CTO Desktop PC
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello HP,

I have tried to hookup my 9 year old HP Envy 700-215xt to a nice curved Dell 32" HDMI monitor, new in the box from Costco.  Because my old HP Envy only has VGA or DVI outputs for a monitor, I bought a cable to convert VGA to HDMI.  When I hook it into my HP, I get various notices on the monitor (black except for the info box) saying there is no signal of HDMI 2, so I switched the HDMI output to HDMI 1 on the monitor.  I got a message saying there is no signal.

Not sure why the HP's VGA connector would not accept a cable that converts VGA to HDMI as opposed to my original VGA male to VGA female cable I am using on my LG monitor.

Question:  can this be done (hooking up a nice new HDMI monitor to my old trusty HP Envy, or is my HP too old to accept a signal/send a signal using a conversion cable as I described?  I did try the same cable I bought (on Amazon) on the HDMI port for my LG monitor (much newer than the computer) but that got no signal messages either, so I am unsure if the brand new cable is defective (seems unlikely), or if the old trusty HP Envy (bought in 2014) simply cannot be used with HDMI monitors.  Any help or procedure guidance to hook it up would be gratefully accepted!  Thank you.

Hi:

I don't believe that you can use a VGA to HDMI cable.

I bought VGA to HDMI cable but it doesn't work 😞 - Microsoft Community

VGA is analog video and DVI and HDMI are digital video.

The easiest thing to do in your situation since your PC has a DVI output, would be to purchase a DVI to HDMI cable so you have a direct digital video transfer.
