I can't seem to hook up my monitors to my Spectre laptop. I had to buy a Display to HDMI (male to male) adapter to plug it in to my laptop, and when I turn the x27q on, it says that the Display Port is inactive. I have no idea what is wrong. Do I need to use the Display to Display (male to male) given with the monitor- and get adapters for that, or is there something I need to do in my laptop settings?

Not sure exactly what your system is. Looking at Spectre I see the x360 family which comes with a pair of thunderbolt ports but your mention display ports. I assume you meant thunderbird. If you got a thunderbird to HDMI you can run any good HDMI cable to the monitor. I would make sure the laptop is plugged in to ensure there is enough power to get a good signal out to the monitor. If the windows device manager sees the second monitor (generic pnp) but there is a "no signal" on the monitor then a better cable is required. I was told by Micro$oft my Surface Pro 4 required an "active HDMI cable" as it saw the monitor but there was no signal.
HTH.
