This means the monitor is not getting a video signal.
You don't change the monitor "modes"; instead, it selects the mode automatically based on the jack the cable is plugged into on the back or bottom of the monitor.
To get the HDMI "mode" you need to have the video cable connected to the HDMI port on the monitor -- and to the HDMI port on the computer.
