Need help with Displayport DP 6005

I am trying to set up an HP 6005 USFF to work with 2 displays. I have obtained a VGA to DisplayPort adapter for the second monitor. Windows Settings says the second monitor is there but I can't get it to stay on.

If I plug one monitor into the VGA and the other into the DP with the adaptor the one plugged into the adaptor stays black while the one plugged into the VGA works.

If I reverse where the monitors are plugged in the one that is plugged into the DP does the same thing so it is not a problem with the monitor.

When I unplug the adaptor from the DP and plug it back in that monitor comes on for a couple of seconds and then goes dark.
