HP OmniStudio X27
Microsoft Windows 11

I assembled the PC on a table, connected the power cable to a wall socket and switched the PC on. The top right corner of the monitor displayed a small light and a pattern but no characters. It did not appear to recognise the wireless mouse or keyboard. I connected an existing wired mouse and the monitor displayed instructions from which I selected the UK options for language, region and keyboard. The PC connected to Wifi as it displayed the items currently connected and asked me to select the router which I did. Then it asked me for the router password but I couldn't do because the PC didn't recognise the keyboard. After a while the screen went blank and since then I have never been able to display anything. However at some point I must have pressed a button that switched on sound (so presumably it did recognised the keyboard?) and since then the PC gives me verbal instructions on how to proceed but I can't see anything so I can't respond to prompts (assuming it is prompting).

Hi @mauricestaples,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the HP OmniStudio X27. I can imagine how unsettling it must feel setting up a brand-new PC, only to be met with a blank screen and a voice guiding you through steps you can't see. You're not alone in this, and I’m here to help you gently navigate through it.

From what you've described, it sounds like the PC initially booted and partially recognized input devices, but then the display stopped working while the system continued to run in the background. The fact that you're hearing verbal instructions suggests that Windows Narrator (a built-in accessibility feature) may have been activated, possibly by pressing Ctrl + Windows + Enter.

Let’s walk through a few steps to bring your display back and regain control:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

This helps clear temporary glitches:

  • Turn off the PC completely by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
  • Unplug the power cable from the wall.
  • Wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in and power on.

2. Try a Different Display Mode

Sometimes the PC may be outputting to a different display mode:

  • Press Windows + P (even if you can't see anything).
  • Then press Down Arrow once, then Enter.
  • Repeat this sequence a few times to cycle through display modes (PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only).

3. Connect an External Monitor

If available, connect an HDMI cable from your PC to another monitor or TV. This will help confirm if the issue is with the built-in display.

4. Use a Wired Keyboard

Since the wireless keyboard isn’t being recognized, plug in a wired USB keyboard. This will allow you to enter the Wi-Fi password and interact with the system.

5. Disable Narrator (if needed)

If the verbal instructions are distracting:

  • Press Ctrl + Windows + Enter again to toggle Narrator off.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Now I have a spare monitor to attach to the desktop PC but I have a new problem. After I moved the PC back about 6 inches to allow room for the monitor I switched the PC on and nothing at all was displayed, Also the keyboard and the mouse did not appear to change anything and I could not get any sound from the PC. My conclusion is that the on/off button no longer has any effect. Possibly this new problem together with the original problem (some things working but no display) could indicate something loose inside the machine which moved when I made the small move of the PC. Any suggestions?

Hi @mauricestaples,

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Your reasoning is spot on; moving the PC could have disturbed an internal connection. Since the power button has no effect, and you’re getting no display, no keyboard/mouse response, and no sound, this points to a power or motherboard connection issue rather than just a monitor problem. Here’s what you should do:

Step 1: Check Power and Cables

  • Ensure the power cable is firmly plugged into the PC and the wall outlet.
  • Try a different outlet or power strip.
  • Look for any LED indicators on the PC if none light up, it’s not getting power.

Step 2: Inspect Inside the PC

  • Unplug the PC completely before opening.
  • Remove the side panel and check:
    • Power supply cables to the motherboard (24-pin ATX and CPU 8-pin).
    • RAM modules: Reseat them gently.
    • The graphics card ensures it’s fully seated.
    • Front panel connectors (power button cable) on the motherboard.

Step 3: Test Power Supply

  • If you have access to a PSU tester or another power supply, test it.
  • A failed PSU can cause a dead system even if everything else is fine.

Step 4: Minimal Boot

  • Disconnect all peripherals except the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
  • Remove extra drives and cards, leave only the CPU, one RAM stick, and the PSU connected.
  • Try powering on.

Step 5: Check for Loose Components

  • Moving the PC can loosen:
    • RAM sticks
    • GPU
    • Power connectors
  • Reseat everything carefully.

If after these steps the PC still shows no signs of life, the issue could be:

  • Faulty power button cable
  • Motherboard failure
  • PSU failure
