The installed Nvidia VGA adapter causes Linux to freeze up requiring reboot.  Apparently Nvidia does not update its drivers to remain compatible with Linux updates. So what other AFFORDABLE (non=Nvidia) VGA cards will work in this venerable HP desktop ?

The 6150se nForce 430 came out in 2004 and lacks a UEFI bios.

What is your HP desktop product ID (not serial number)

If your HP system was manufactured before about 2010 it probably does not have a UEFI bios which limits your graphic adapter options.

If you provide your product ID possibly I can identify which graphic boards can be used.

It would be helpful to know the power supply wattage of your system when recommending a video board.

What Linux are you running?  Mint seems to run on just about anything.

Boot into terminal mode and disable hardware acceleration?

Hello BB: you wrote - "What is your HP desktop product ID (not serial number) ?"  The HP desktop MODEL is 505B.  If that is different from  the "product id" plz advise how to find prod id ??

Also it is successfully running UBUNTU MATE 19.04  but for some reason trying to upgrade to 20.04 causes a freeze which requires a reboot.  Several apparently conflicting software config changes have been suggested but are beyond my pay grade as a recovering Windows user and Linux newbie. So if there is a COST-EFFECTIVE hardware solution (non-Nvidia VGA) it's worth considering.

Thanx for your help.

ps: this situation with what shd be a simple OS upgrade is even making Windows look good

According to this spec you have the Pegatron 2A99 motherboard

Check that you that the latest bios 6.14 (March 24, 2011)

Your power supply is 300 watts but it is ATX so can be upgraded.

Possibly that 2011 bios supports UEFI to allow later graphics to woirk

the gt218 seems to work as shown here

I would ether go back to 19 or do a clean install of 20

You could also install windows 10x64 and use the win7 serial number to activate

The following cards could be used instead (or in addition to?) the built in

HD 4350

Nvidia g210

If you could borrow an RX560 or a GTX1050TI you could find out if the 6.14 bios supports UEFI as both of those boards boards need only 250watts power

I suspect they will not work but that is a guess based on the age of the age of the system.

Depending on the CPU possibly more than 4gb can be installed

Hi BB: thanx but you wrote - "Check that you that the latest bios 6.14 (March 24, 2011)". That more recent BIOS lvl apparently is only for Windows and not Linux.  Any appropriate Linux software fixes will be appreciated.  If none, then a replacement NON-Nvidia VGA card will be considered. Does that seem reasonable ?
