My touchpad is stuck down in like a permanent click or drag, whenever I move it, it highlights like being permanently stuck down, which makes it impossible to work with.
I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, restarting, checking for updates and checking over the settings.
It seems like it’s getting worse, and it’s been this way for about a week. Please could anyone give me any tips for how to fix this issue?

Hi @alexiameow,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Pavilion's touchpad may be experiencing a hardware issue or a specific software conflict. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem.
Check Physical Condition
- Clean the Touchpad: Make sure there are no dirt or debris causing the touchpad to register as pressed. Use a microfiber cloth to gently clean it.
- Inspect for Damage: Look for any visible signs of damage or wear on the touchpad.
Check Touchpad Settings
- Disable Tap to Click: Sometimes, the tap-to-click feature can malfunction.
- Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad and try disabling the tap-to-click option.
- Adjust Sensitivity: You can also try adjusting the sensitivity settings in the touchpad settings.
Update or Roll Back Drivers
- Device Manager:
- Right-click on the Start Menu and select Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click on your touchpad device and select Properties.
- Under the Driver tab, check if you can Update Driver or Roll Back Driver (if the option is available).
Check for System Updates
- Ensure your operating system is fully updated.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
Disable Touchpad While Typing
- If the touchpad is still causing issues, you can try disabling it temporarily while typing:
- In Touchpad settings, look for an option that disables the touchpad while typing and enable it.
Perform a System Restore
- If the issue started recently, consider performing a system restore to a point before the problem began:
- Type "System Restore" in the Windows search bar and follow the prompts.
External Mouse Test
- If you have an external mouse, connect it and see if the issue persists. If the external mouse works correctly, it might further indicate a hardware issue with the touchpad.
Hardware Diagnostic
- Run HP's built-in hardware diagnostics:
- Restart your laptop and press F2 to access HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. Run a touchpad test.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
