Hello,
My HP 32f Display went dark. The power light comes on but there's no one home. The mac does recognize it's there (I see it in the Display Settings) but nothing shows.
I think it's five years old. The warranty is expired.
Does anyone think it is worth fixing or should I just get another one. (Not sure it will be HP, though)
Thank you for your advice.
Chuck

Hi there @chuck92, and welcome to HP Support Community!
Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.
I understand how frustrating it can be when a trusted display suddenly stops working, especially when it's out of warranty.
From your description, it sounds like your HP 32f monitor powers on (power LED is lit) and is detected by your Mac in Display Settings, but the screen remains dark. This suggests the issue may be with the backlight, internal display circuitry, or possibly a faulty panel.
Here are a few steps you can try before deciding whether to repair or replace:
Check with a Different Device and Cable
- Try connecting the monitor to a different computer using a different HDMI cable.
- If possible, test with a DisplayPort cable (if your model supports it).
- This helps rule out issues with the Mac or cable.
Perform a Power Reset
- Unplug the monitor from power.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Plug it back in and power it on.
Inspect for Backlight Function
- Shine a flashlight closely on the screen while it's powered on.
- If you can faintly see the desktop or any image, the backlight may have failed.
Check for On-Screen Display (OSD)
- Press the menu or input button on the monitor.
- If the OSD doesn’t appear, it’s likely a hardware fault.

Good morning, Max3Aj,
Thank you for the reply and suggestions. I tried the options that I could (see below), but nothing worked.
I should have also mentioned that the OSD does not appear. And I should have read all the way through the list first! That would have saved me a lot of trouble. LOL
I'll check with Best Buy (they are the HP repair place nearest) to see how much to fix.
Thank you again for your help.
------------------------------
Here's what I tried. As I said, nothing worked.
I tried the HDMI cable in a different port on the monitor. I only have 2 HDMIs and a VGA. I probably have a VGA cord around somewhere, but nowhere to plug it in! (So long, VGA. How little we loved you)
I tried the same cable on a different computer.
I tried a different cable on a different computer.
I tried the same cable on a different monitor on a different computer. Okay, this worked.
I performed instructions for the power reset.
I see nothing with the flashlight.

@chuck92, Thanks for the detailed follow-up, and good morning to you too!
You’ve done an excellent job troubleshooting, and I appreciate the humor about VGA! 😊
Based on everything you've tried (especially confirming that the cable and other devices work, and that the OSD and flashlight test show no image), it’s very likely that the internal panel or backlight circuitry has failed.
Please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, they will check and assist you further.
Regards,
Max3Aj
