can a HP EliteDisplay e220t be used via a DP splitter?

i am trying to use an HP EliteDisplay e220t touch monitor as a second monitor but my current video card only has a single DP connection.  I have a DP splitter which my first monitor is working on, but with the e220t i get a 'check video cable' message on the screen.  Note: if I plug the monitor directly into the DP connection (i.e., without the splitter, the monitor works).  So I am trying to confirm whether the e220t will work via a DP splitter or if I have a different problem (i.e., setting/config)?  Thanks in advance.
