HP Pavilion 2009v Monitor

So I have recently bought a cable adaptor which connects old HDTV to HDMI, well I think it does. However when connecting the HP Pavilion 2009v Monitor to my laptop via this cable an error comes up on the monitor saying to check the Video cable. The cable says 'HDTV' on the adaptor cable going into the HDMI port on my laptop, so am unsure if I need a cable adaptor connecting old HDTV to new HDMI because I think its trying to connect a old HDTV to modern HDTV, when i need it to go into a HDMI port so am unsure if that is the reason. Would really appreciate anyone's thoughts on this.

Cheers,

Dan Fisk
