Hello,
Every time when i turn on my laptop with an USB connected to it, it will just show a black screen with my caps-lock LED flashing 3 long times and then 2 short times. Please, if someone knows how to solve this issue, i would be glad to know.

Hi @Hank102
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The flashing caps lock LED pattern (3 long flashes followed by 2 short flashes) on HP laptops indicates a hardware issue, often related to the BIOS or memory. Here’s how to troubleshoot the problem:
1. Remove External Devices:
- Disconnect all USB devices and peripherals from the laptop. Sometimes, a faulty USB device can cause boot issues.
2. Perform a Hard Reset:
- Power off the laptop.
- Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
- Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try turning it on.
3. Check RAM:
- If you're comfortable doing so, try reseating the RAM:
- Turn off the laptop and remove the battery and power adapter.
- Open the access panel (if applicable), carefully remove the RAM sticks, and then reinsert them firmly.
4. Reset BIOS:
- If you can access the BIOS (usually by pressing Esc, F2, or F10 during startup), try resetting it to default settings.
5. Check for Faulty RAM:
- If you have multiple RAM sticks, try booting with just one stick at a time to see if one of them is faulty.
6. Disconnect Hard Drive:
- If the laptop continues to fail, disconnect the hard drive and see if it will at least pass the POST (Power-On Self-Test). If it does, the issue may be with the hard drive.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
