Did desktops like mine have a wlan bios whitelist like notebooks did? or was that notebook exclusive? My desktop is from 2012 and has a 3rd gen ivy bridge intel cpu. I was looking to replace my wlan card, preferably one with 5ghz and Bluetooth support and didn't want to waste money on something that didn't work. My current wlan card is a ralink rt5390r 802.11bgn wifi adapter.

Hi:
Does your PC have two antenna wires connected to the Ralink card?
If so, you can upgrade to this card.
Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11 ac 2x2 WiFi + BT 4.0 HP Part # 710661-001
If it does not, if your PC has a free PCIe x 1 slot, then I recommend you remove the Ralink card, zip tie the single antenna wire to some adjacent wires to prevent the terminal on the antenna wire from contacting the motherboard and purchase a PCIe x1 desktop Wi-Fi kit with the latest Wi-Fi technology.
Something like this...
You connect the Bluetooth cable to the Wi-Fi adapter and the other end into your PC's 9-pin internal USB header on the motherboard in order for the Bluetooth to work.
Or you may just want to get the better Wi-Fi adapter anyway.

It only has one antenna, but it has a spot to add a second in the top of the case (which i was going to buy a second of). The RAlink card also only has one antenna port, but i was going to buy a new one with two.

If you are going to add the second antenna wire, then the Intel 7260 card I posted will work.
You can find them for sale on eBay.
Search by the HP part number, not the model of the Wi-Fi card.
You can also try one of these cards which would have a much newer Wi-Fi chipset, but you need to be running Windows 10.
