Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP

My computer went to crap on me so I tried to connect my old hp windows xp computer.its a little outdated and needs updated but works great. My only issue is that it's not letting me connect it to the internet with ethernet cable keeps going to dial up.  What am I doing wrong? It is all connected securely. I have tried everything I can think of.
