Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Pavillion 23-q113w Since updates (I think) I can't get onto the internet. Router and CPU are connected initially but will not connect to the Internet. I get to desk top of Microsoft explorer and Chrome but can't get to a Web page. Please help.

That error means your hard drive is about to take a dump, if it hasn't already.

 

But you can simply replace the hard drive yourself if you rather, assuming its out of warranty.

IF you do replace it yourself, You could always upgrade to an SSD. It will run much faster that way.

You can install Windows 10 via the Microsoft Media Creation tool and then install the drivers manually from the HP website for your model.

Ill try to help best I can.

 

I need more specific details to know how to help.

I assume you cannot connect Wirelessly. Can you connect with an ethernet cable and does it work?

Is the Wifi icon showing your are connected?

I don't know your tech level, so I will begin with this...

 

Try these steps first to help narrow down the trouble.

1. 

  • Turn off the PC
  • Unplug both the router and (if you have one) the modem for 5 minutes and disconnect any cables connecting them.
  • Replug the power to the modem first and let it fully boot up.
  • Then replug the power to the router and let it fully boot up.
  • Then connect any cables to the router and modem.
  • Then turn on the PC

2. If that does not help, go to the troubleshooting step as outlined in this HP support page and see if anything helps.

Thank you, I didn't do all the suggestions (getting no joy), so I went to Staples got free diagnostic test that showed "holes in security ". I went home did a Hard Drive Short DST Check. It failed!...The failure ID:PG8G9L-82U8MT-GXPSMF-60U203. Is it time to buy a new computer?

HP has a limited manual that gives you a schematic of the insides. Page 11 shows how to take the back off and get to the drive. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04717173

Here's a tip on the drive replacement:

If you want the original 1TB of storage as well as the operating system on the same drive, go with another spinning hard drive. I recommend a WD black drive with 5 yr warranty. (cheaper per gig over an SSD)

If you want to improve the startup time and overall speed, go with an SSD (more $ per gig but 5 times faster).

Pretty much any major brand SSD will be fine, its personal preference.

I usually go with either samsung or crucial.

But you will also need a caddy adapter to fit the SSD into the HDD cage with.

I think your system came with Windows 8.1 and you are using 10 now.

You will need to use the MS Media Creation Tool to clean install the OS onto the new drive.

Create media Windows 10

If your system is biffed now, then make the USB installer on another PC. You will need an 8 GB or larger (up to 32 GB will work USB flash drive.

 

Then you will also have to install the drivers for that machine.

Grab them from here and make sure they are for Windows 10, not 8.1...

Install all the appropriate drivers.

 

For networking, choose the driver for the type of wifi card your system has.

If you don't know which wifi card you have, go to the Device Manger and navigate to the Networking dropdown and see what is listed. (Do this now before you get started with the new installation, if the old system will still startup).

To do this, type Device Manger into the Search bar (Cortana) and choose it from the list.

Scroll down to Network Adapters and drop the little arrow down next to it.

You will either have Realtek, Intel or Broadcom.

Do the same for Bluetooth if you have it.
