Hi @weekstraveler,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand that you are getting cartridge error with your Envy printer. Don't worry I'll be really glad to help you with this,

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Which country do you reside in and was the printer purchased from the same country?

Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges or refilled cartridges?

Have you tried to clean the ink cartridges contacts as well as the printhead?

Are you able to make a copy from the printer?

Let’s start by performing a power drain on the printer. Follow the steps below:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

I found a wonderful document to help you fix this issue - HP ENVY 4500, Deskjet 3540 Printers - Cartridge Missing or Incompatible Ink Cartridges Error Display...

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to remove the ink cartridges and then try to use single cartridge and check, by doing so you will find out which ink cartridge is faulty.

Depending on the results, I would personally suggest you contact our HP phone support for further assistance.
