@mbosch1, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e paper tray won’t close and seems stuck on the back left side, even though there’s no visible jam or damage, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Power Off and Unplug the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • This ensures safety and resets any mechanical locks.

Remove the Paper Tray Completely

  • Gently pull the input tray all the way out.
  • Inspect the tray and the cavity for any small bits of paper, packaging material, or foreign objects that might be obstructing the mechanism.

Inspect the Tray Rails and Guides

  • Look closely at the left rear corner where it seems to be hung up.
  • Check for any misaligned plastic guides or bent parts.
  • Sometimes, the tray rollers or guides can shift slightly and prevent proper retraction.

Reset the Tray Mechanism

  • With the tray removed, gently press on the tray guides and rollers to ensure they move freely.
  • Reinsert the tray slowly and evenly, ensuring it aligns with the tracks on both sides.

Check for False Paper Jam Errors

  • Even if no jam is reported, the printer might think there’s one.

Perform a Printer Reset

  • After checking the tray, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • This can help reset the internal sensors and tray detection.

If the tray still won’t close or feels stuck:

  • Try gently wiggling the tray while pushing it in, don’t force it.
  • If the issue persists, it may be a mechanical fault. In that case, we suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: HP® Service Center Locator - United States | HP® Support
(Select the country from the dropdown menu and enter the city name or pincode)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
