HP Pavilion

I am trying to open my late mil's laptop to retrieve pictures and files, and I thought my boggest problem was going to be password (pretty sure I know that). Of course it's not that easy! It hasn't been on in at least 6 months, possibly longer. I plugged it in to a power cord and the lights all come on, but the screen stays black. I tried the recommended steps of unpluggin, remiving battery, etc. If I plug it back in without the battery in, the power lights flash on but won't stay on. If I try just he battery (which I am sure is dead), same thing. With battery and cord, the power light (lightning bolt in bottom corner) stays on, but no images, no cursor. Tried ctrl alt del and ctrl shift escape, no results. Suggestions??? I'm sur ethere are things on here the family would love to have, but taking it to a repair shop is out of the budget right now!

Oh, and when I try things like caps lock, there is no response (no light, etc.)
