I bought a HP p3280a (is that model number any use to you?) a couple of weeks ago with Windows 7 loaded on it. At first it worked a treat but the other night something weird happened. I tried to start it up and it froze on the blue HP boot screen and wouldnt go any further, and none of the options (boot menu etc) seemed to work.
This was extremely frustrating and i assumed there was some kind of hardware failure. However when i was almost ready to throw in the towel and take it back to the store, i played around a bit more and found that i could access the boot menu if i was quick enough on the key when the boot screen appeared. After a bit of mucking about i found that the computer would boot perfectly normally if i turned the diagnostic screen option on.
So now at least i have a working computer again, but the same problem recurs if i turn the option off again. Is there a problem with the BIOS or whats the story?
Any help would be appreciated.

double checked that.... its definitely correct. it has a quad core "q4800" processor, 4gb RAM, 750gb hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce 220 graphics card and running 64bit windows 7

csrchmnd. Use the steps here and see if this helps for now..

You can do this in BIOS by pressing F10 to get into BIOS.
What system model do you have and which BIOS version are you using?
jsnowd02 was using 5.02 where he had issues.

I have a model p6140f s/n MXU9220BO0 or maybe the zeros and "O's" are mixed.
Purchased 7/29/09 and updated to windows 7 without issues until now.
I tried to get the computer to respond to the "F10" command and the others but it is unresponsive once the HP screen shows.
At that same time the hard drive light goes on for a brief period and then out.
I tried unpluging everything and then holding the power switch down for 30-40 seconds.
Then I reapplied power but get to the same screen where it freezes.
What esle can I try?

The drivers are a major cause of Windows 7 freezing. Even though the devices would be compatible there may be some driver conflicts which lead to screen freezing in a Windows7 PC. Moreover, the drivers may not be updated. To check on the right drivers and updates manufacturer’s website can be referred. Screen freezing can also occur if the Windows registry files are not organized and have flaws. To resolve it perform a cleaning on the system. Even applications like ncleaner can be used to clean the registry.
