Solved!

Cannot Defrag "System" on my HP Pavilion Desktop

I cannot defrag "System" on my HP desktop.  I am using Windows 7.

The OS C: is 0%, Recovery 😧 is 0%, but the System is showing 38% and I cannot analyze or defrag System.  The CPU is running slower & I'm getting a bit frustrated.

Hi,

The System partition should not be defragmented - it contains the boot files and recovery environment for Windows 7 and will always show as fragmented which is perfectly normal.  Also this has no effect on the performance of your operating system.

Regarding the performance issue, try the following.

From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.

Next, click the Start Menu, click Computer, left click Local Disk C once to highlight it, right click Local Disk C and select Properties.  Click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'.  In the following window make sure both boxes are ticked and then click Start.  Agree to schedule the check at the next system restart and then restart the notebook - this process can take several hours to complete before loading back into Windows.

Regards,

DP-K

So Mr Clever, why dose the system continue to increase fragmentation, it starts of 0% then go to 5% then 7% fragmented then up to 26% fragmented, so your talking rubbish, if system was not meant to be defragmented then there woulds not be the option to do it, though it dont work. System would not be visable there would be no reason to show it, if you could not defrag it your so wrong dunce DP-K
