D530SFF: Unable to reload Windows XP Pro - "mountmgr.sys" causing an unexpected error

I'm trying to rebuild a D530SFF desktop using XP_Pro.  Setup kicks-off no problem, but, whilst setup tells me it's loading files (all IBE BUS drivers) in the lower portion of the screen, I get the following error:

"File mountmgr.sys caused an unexpected error (1024) at line 5897 in d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\setup.c."

The default action once acknowledged is to reboot.

The disk being used is an original, legitimate MS disk (XP Pro with SP1 as the error message suggests).

I can't tell what was loaded originally on the hard disk, because it just won't boot at all (it is XP_Pro, but possibly with later service packs).

Has anyone come across this problem before?  Could you point me in the right direction please?

Many thanks.
