Desktop Computer doesn't turn on

Hey I have an HP Pavilion a6742p and I can't get it to turn on, when I press the power button the green light on the back of my computer turns off. I figured out that if I disconnect the power plug and reconnect it or if I hold down the power button for about 5 seconds the green light turns back on but the computer does nothing. I tried disconnecting the power source from everything and reconnecting and still nothing. The computer stopped working after a power outage ocurred, but when it ocurred the computer wasn't even on. Any ideas on what's happening?

First of all, welcome to the user forums.

The procedures for tesing the power supply are here:

The specs on your unit:

The power cord supplies a minute voltage to the PSU and motherboard in the OFF position. That said, IMHO your old 250W PSU has not survived a power spike.

Good news is that your in the position to make choices. New PSU, and maybe a nice PCIE graphics card.

An energy efficient PSU can save you $$ in the future. The meaurements are important. These units are all 5.9 x 3.4 x  "X" long. The "X" is depth into your case. The PSU in your case is 5.5"  L (or depth). Some of these listed below are longer.

Rosewill (exact fit PSU's):

You need to measure for these.

If you elect to also upgrade the graphics,  ask.
