HP Envy 700qe
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My hard drive has crashed and I've bought a new one.  I'd like to transfer my Windows 10 OS to the new hard drive.  The old HD is not even spinning up (but for some reason, I can see the recovery partition, e.g. X:)

How can I do this?  Can I get the product key from HP and just download the latest version of Windows and boot from a thumb drive and install or do I need to do something more?

Thanks!

Hi,

You can download the latest version of Windows 10 from Microsoft and create pendrive. Boot from drive and install Windows 10.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You do not need product key, when prompted just click on do not have product key. As long as you install the same edition (home or pro) as was already installed on PC it will be automatically activated when connected to internet.

Hope it helps,

David

Thanks for the reply.  I shall try this when I get home and see if it works.

Your welcome.

Let me know if you need any further help with installation and how it works out.

You might need to turn off secure boot in Bios and enable legacy boot to be able to boot from pendrive.
