HP Compaq 8100 Elite CMT : Need 400w Power Supply Replacement.

I ordered a refurbished HP Compaq 8100 Elite CMT Quad Core i7-860 2.80GHz 8GB RAM 1TB HDD

And I ordered a geforce 650 gtx that requires 400w power supply. I am not sure on which power supply I will need to order that will fit in this. Can anyone help me?

Hi:

The power supplies on HP dc7xxx and Elite 8xxx are proprietary.

They do not use a standard 24 pin connector to the mainboard.

There are no power supplies you can purchase other than another 325W standard power supply for the CMT.

That is the only one HP makes for that model.

I recommend you return the card if you can't use it with the standard power supply.

I use a Radeon 6670 in my 8200 Elite CMT with the same power supply and my card also requires a 400W P/S.

I have no issues with it whatsoever.  The card draws a max of 66 W.

The 650 gtx draws less than that.

MIne did not require an extra pcie power connector though, as the 650 GTX does.

Do you think you will have to replace your PSU sooner than normal? And I'm trying to find the manual on the HP site I was looking at earlier because the computer is being shipped currently. The GPU's power connector is an issue?

You're very welcome.

The service manual does not show the mainboard connector but it shows all of the rest.

It appears the P/S does come with a PCIe 6 pin connector according to the manual.

I can't speculate about how long the P/S will last in my PC.

That would be completely dependent on the load placed on it, and I do not use my graphics adapter for anything more than surfing the web, and watching videos on TV.

I do not use it for playing graphics-intensive games.

I have been using it for almost 3 years without any issues whatsoever under these conditions.

Worst case scenario is that I get a replacement on eBay, they are relatively cheap and plentiful.

One from an 8000, 8100, 8200 or 8300 Elite should all be interchangeable.

Use an adaptor for your 2nd power supply, that's what worked for me.

5.00 after all my searching I found the answer, it's not pretty but it works.

Plug one of your SATA power plugs (from your current power supply) into the cable that comes with it, plug in your new ATX power supply ATX plug into the adaptor and you are good to go. When your old power supply turns on the adaptor will turn on your new one, it's awesome.

You could buy a dedicated power supply if you can find one but I don’t recommend it, they are expensive, make a lot of heat and noise.

This was a nightmare for me and I don’t want other people having to go through what I did.
