Re: HP Pavilion a1742n. .

You are not getting any video to the monitor but the PC hardware is up and running.

First, connect the monitor to another PC if at all possible - a freinds laptop for example. This will tell if the monitor cable and signal processing is good. If you get the same error whan connected to anoter PC - check the cable.

If the monitor is good when connected to another PC, connect it back to the original computer to see if it was just the connecttion.

If it's still bad - reset the BIOS blindly as follows:

  • Turn off the computer, and then remove the power cord.
  • With the power cord disconnected, press and hold the power button for five seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord, and then turn on the computer.
  • Repeatedly press the F10 key about once every second for five seconds after turning the computer on.
  • Wait five seconds.
  • Press the F5 key. This restores the default settings of the BIOS.
  • Press the Enter key. This accepts the changes.
  • Press the F10 key. This opens the Save and Exit window.
  • Press the Enter key. This saves the changes, exits the BIOS, and then the computer restarts.
  • After the computer restarts, the screen should display the HP logo.
  • I am an HP employee expressing my own opinion.
Please post rather than send me a message. It's good for the community and I might not be able to get back quickly. - Thank you.

It still won't boot.  Tried all of that.  Hear the fan running but nothing happens.  Is it junk?  Could the RAM need to be reseated or hard drive be shot?
