I was looking for help with the same issue, but purely by accident was able to fix.
What I did (I am using Vista, BTW, so steps may be different for you):
1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Select Hardware and Sound.
3. Select Device Manager.
4. Expand "Disc Drives".
5. Right click on the DVD drive listed and select "Scan for Hardware Changes" (You can probably right click on anything and get the same result.)
After I did this, the disc drive seemed to work. May have been a fluke, but it seemed to do the trick. Hopefully this will work for others that are having the same issue.

If the bios doesn't see your CD/DVD drive then you probably have a hardware issue. You might try removing the drive and then reinstalling it.
Try a hard reset. Unplug your laptop, remove the battery and hold down the power button for 30-60 seconds. Replace the battery and plug the laptop back in. Power up and boot into the bios and see if the bios now recognizes the drive.

removing the drive and reinstalling it, but hp doesn't even have these drivers on their website. so now even if i wanted to i couldn't get the necessary drivers for my dv6000.
hp has us in a bind here!
