HP Z420

Hi,

Setup:

HPZ420

CPU:xeon E5-1620 v2,

RAM: 8 GB DDR3 1600MHz (4x2GB) loaded into the numbered slots

SSD: samsung 950 pro (as noted on these forums this should boot from out of the box),

M.2 adapter: Asus hyper m.2 x4 adapter

However it starts up, shows the HP screen for about a second, with '...ROM options' and 'press esc to enter setup' etc then goes to black and stays there.  Even when i press escape it says 'enterring setup...' but just the same happens (goes to black).  The graphics card must still be sending a signal because the monitor only goes to sleep when i turn the PC off.

Here is what i have tried so far, with no change:

-Tried booting from HDD

-Tried taking out two of the four sticks of RAM in case they were faulty

-Tried switching the SSD position from the PCIe 3.0 x8 slot to the PCIe 2.0 x4  above

-Tried inserting the windows 7 boot disk

Any ideas?

WIndows 7 does not have native NVMe support.

Have  you installed the Samsung NVMe drivers when installing the OS to the 950 Pro?

Thanks, sorry for the delayed response - it was actually a faulty monitor that was given to me.   That aside once i switched out the monitors i am in the same boat as others who have tried this - namely the bios sees the ssd, but not windows when you go to install it from a disk.

The bios is v 3.65 i think, so no need to update.  I understand i have to install the OS to a hdd, then install the NVMe drivers, i don't understand the cloning process - so does that mean once i install the drivers, windows will be able to see the ssd?  There are quite mixed instructions online with some saying that doesn't work, so would be grateful for info from any Z-x20 users who have done it successfully.

Cheers
