HP says I cant clone win 8.1

Techs tell me I can add sdd and make  it primary but I cannot clone or recover OS 8.1 to new ssd dr4ive.  I need to buy WIN 8.1 at retail to do so.   This doesn't make any sense to me but I heard it from two different tech supports personnel.

HP says I cant clone win 8.1

DACZ, welcome to the forum.

This may be due to the fact that when the computer comes with Win 8.0 or 8.1 installed, the Product Key is embedded into the BIOS.  I don't know for certain, but this is my accessment of the situation.

What is the full make / model of the SSD?  Some brands are much easier to install than others.  I have a 810-135qe with Win 7 and a Samsung 840 EVO - 500GB.  It installed without any problems.  I used their Migration software to clone my HDD to the SSD.

Did the SSD come with migration software so you can clone your HDD?

You have to make certain that the SSD has enough space to hold all of the data on the HDD.  If not, you can transfer some of it to a backup drive.

The first thing that you have to do is enter the BIOS to assure that it is set to AHCI.  This is very important because if you do this after the SSD is installed it will cause problems.  This setting makes all of the special capabilities of the SSD available.

When I installed my SSD, I kept the HDD installed as it was when it came from the factory.  This way it was not changed and ready for an emergency.  I used an adapter and installed the SSD into a vacant 3.5" drive bay.  Then, connected it to one of the vacant SATA connectors on the motherboard.  I installed the migration software on the HDD.  Once installed, you can run it.  You will choose the HDD as the Origin drive and the SSD as the Destination drive.  Once the drive was cloned, I disconnected the HDD and booted.  The SSD booted the first time.

I wouldn't think that it would hurt anything to give this a try.  If it doesn't work, you can always buy the full copy of Win 8.1.

Thanks for info.

Crucial didn't include migration software.   From what I could tell, the crucial software is nothing more than acronis, a sata cable and adapter.   I already own Acronis.

I didn't change or verify my bios settings prior to install.  Will try that.

As far as cloning,  I should be ok.   I basically did a recovery and would only be cloning windows files.   I think the win partitions are approx 45 gb.

You are very welcome.

I would appreciate hearing the outcome of your attempt to install and run Win 8.1 on your SSD.

HP says I cant clone win 8.1

Found a utility for $15.60 with coupon by Paragon that supports win 8.1 migration from any source to ssd.   Really very slick..  Ran utility and within 10 minutes, partitions and folders of my choice were copied to new ssd.  I modified bios to designate new ssd as primary drive.  Runs like a top.

Thank you for the assistance.  You were right, HP was wrong.   No need to buy a retail copy of WIN 8.1..
