z840
Linux

I just got a new HP z840 - dual E5-2667 v4 CPUs. After installing our company's official Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.7 64-bit image, it throws a kernel panic during boot. This happens with installed RHEL 6.7 and via a live DVD/USB CentOS 6.7 and CentOS 6.8. HP lists RHEL 6 as a supported operating system.

I tried adding the boot option nomodeset, no help. When installing RHEL 6.7 via kickstart I gave the dd option to include the HP provided driver disc for RHEL 6.7 but it said the driver disc was incorrect; I also tried downloading it from HP and providing that instead; no luck.

A live DVD/USB of Ubuntu 16.04 or CentOS 7.3 boot successfully.

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Pid: 1, comm: init Not tainted 2.6.32-573.el6.x86_64 #1

Call Trace:

  panic  [hex addresses omitted]

  do_exit

  fput

  do_group_exit

  sys_exit_group

  system_call_fastpath

drm_kms_helper: panic occurred, switching back to text console

Verify the reason behind deletion of swap device while it was in use. In some cases it is also observed that underlying devices used for swap filesystem are not deleted from system, but it is having large number of IO errors, due to which the read IO on swap filesystem fails and results in same panic as described here. In such case as well, it would be recommended to please investigate why the IO on underlying disk devices were failing?   Root Cause The kernel evoked panic() function because "init" task with PID (1) received a "SIGBUS" (7) signal due to "BUS_ADRERR". A "SIGBUS" can be caused by any general device fault that the computer detects, though a bus error rarely means that the computer hardware is physically broken. Bus error may also be raised for certain other paging errors. In this example "init" task with PID (1) received a "SIGBUS" (7) signal because of the deletion of swap device while it was in use.   Please refer below URL   http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=mmr_kc-0108214   **Click Accept as Solution on a Reply that solves your issue to help others** ******Clicking the Thumbs-Up button is a way to say -Thanks!.*****

Hi,

Thank you for Choosing HP 🙂

We can try this option

In BIOS >> Storage >> Sata Emulation >> Change to IDE and press F10 to save

Disable UEFI and Enable legacy in Boot order by pressing F5 function key

try to install the OS and check.

For BIOS Options you can refer Service for this Model:

First of all, please look at the following Linux Hardware Matrix, page 17, and check if there is any limitations wth your configuration. You may try to  use RHEL 6.8 or RHEL 7.2.

If your configuration should have been working fine, you need to call HP Support and escalate it.
