How can I delete a redundant file icon on my desktop display screen?

HP ENVY
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I deleted a PDF document but the file icon still displays on my screen - I have tried to "cut" or "delete" the file icon but I received thisa message: "Item Not Found" "Could not find item" "This is no longer located in C:\Users\MYCOMPUTER NAME\Desktop." "Verify the item's location and try again."  It then shows the name of the File, the File Size {which is 0 bytes}, Date Modified.

I have tried emptying the Temp Folder; the Recycle Bin; deletions from several sources and locations, including, but not limited to Documents; My Computer, etc. with no success.

Youe help and assisstance will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.
