@502jim

A very warm welcome to the HP community. A very good day to you.

I understand that you have an HP Pavillion computer and downloaded the Avg tune up. Due to this, the computer is stuck on disc repair for almost a week. The computer is not responding to the F8 key. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • The exact product model no. This link will help you to find the model no: http://hp.care/2bygf7l.
  • May I know the reason for downloading the Avg tune up? Were you facing any issues with the performance?
  • Did you press the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys and check if it opens the Windows Task Manager and you can end the process from there?

I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Please press the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys and if the Windows Task Manager open then you may end the disk repair.
  • If the computer does not respond to the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys then press and hold the power button until the computer goes off.
  • Please restart the computer and check if it boots into Windows or not.

If the computer does not boot into Windows then I suggest to run a test on the hard drive by following the below steps:

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  • Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second.

  • The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu is displayed.

  • Select Component tests.

  • Please initiate the hard drive test. There are six hard drive tests, and they can take from 10 minutes to 2 hours or more to complete.

    To run the hard drive tests, follow the steps in Hard Drive Tests.

Please feel free to let me know the results. All the best! 🙂
