My pc wants me to activate with a new product key, how do I do this?

HP Recommended
HP Pavilion 23-h024 TouchSmart
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Recently I tried to install the free Windows 10 update and now my PC tells me it is not activated and that I need to reactivate it with a new product key? Why is it doing this and how do I fix it?

I am not very computer savy and do not have the original packaging that came with my pc two years ago.

Please help!

@jalewis, welcome to the forum.

I suggest that you contact Microsoft's Customer Service for help with your problem.  You should not have to use a Product Key to activate Win 10.

Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

My computer would not accept the Windows 10 download because its saying that my Windows 8.1 that i have been using is not active and it wants me to activate it with a new product key.

I just don't understand.

Thank you for the additional information, @jalewis.  This is why you should contact Microsoft.  They are the only ones who can solve your problem.

Make certain that Win 8.1 is fully up to date by running HP and Windows Updates and try to upgrade again.  If this doesn't work, please contact Microsoft.

Your PC should already have been activated with Win8.1 -- as the HP OEM PCs come preactivated.

If yours was not, that was a problem with the original installation.

What you can try is using this tool to retrieve your product key and then manually entering it: Showkey - Windows 10 Forums

Good Luck
