Pavilion p6720f
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

After shutting down my PC last night I tried to turn it on this morning. When I pressed the power button, I could hear the fan come on as usual but nothing happened on the monitor. Also the lights on my keyboard and mouse wouldn't turn on. I turned it off by holding down the power button and turned it back on. This time the led light that shows that the computer is on wouldn't light up but I could still hear the fan starting.

I have checked my monitor using another pc to make sure it's working and it is. I have also tried reseting the CMOS by taking out the battery for some time and putting it back in.

Please help.

Hi @Michael212,

Good Day! Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums! I read your post about  an issue with the computer not booting. I will be delighted to assist you here. 🙂

Fabulous diagnosis and superb  analysis of the issue before posting.  Kudos to you on that score. It is always a privilege to work with technical specialists like you. 🙂

.  You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here.

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this?

  • Did this happen after a power outage or a surge?
  • Did you make any hardware changes to the computer recently, like a memory upgrade or hard drive replacement?

Please perform a hard reset from this link: http://support.hp.com/za-en/document/c01463028

If that does not do the trick, you could try a bios roll back as well from this link:

http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-23-All-in-One-Desktop-PC-series/6528335/model/652977...

Then try to power up the computer. If it fails, please follow all the steps from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-p6700-Desktop-PC-series/5035348/model/5049541/docume...  and try to power up the unit.

If nothing works then, it is a hardware issue with the PC and it needs to be serviced. As the PC is an older unit and not manufactured anymore, Service options to repair it are not available with HP anymore.

I request you to contact a local Best Buy or Staples technician to get the unit fixed.

Hope this helps.  Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.

If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂

Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

This did not happen after a power outage and I did not make any hardware changes. I have tried all these steps and nothing worked.

What does it mean when I hear the computer turn on but the power light is off? Also the lights on the mouse and keyboard don't turn on, what does that mean? Everything was working fine the day before and was shut down normaly. I don't think it is a hardware issue becuase the psu is working fine and providing power. This has to do with the start up function which is why I think it has to do with BIOS. But becasue the keyboard is not lighing up (I assume not being recognized) I can't even do the step you sent about the BIOS.

Hi @Michael212,

Brilliant troubleshooting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 Thanks for the super quick reply. Please understand that the PC's power supply unit could be working fine but the issue could be with the motherboard.

Please visit the third link from my previous post and try the steps. If it does not work, then the issue is definitely hardware related and you may need to contact a local Best Buy or Staples technician to get the unit serviced.

Trust me I've done all I can to assist you here by keeping your best interest in mind. The bios is not working as the unit is not responding here.  I genuinely hope the issue resolved without hassles and the unit works fine. 🙂

Please follow the bellow steps.

  • Turn off the computer and unplug all cables, except for power, and write down each cable location.
  • Unplug the power cable and press the Power button.
  • If possible, move the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over an uncarpeted floor.
  • Remove the panel retaining screws.
  • Slide off the panel to expose the inside of the computer.
  • Look inside the computer and locate the memory modules on the motherboard. Memory modules are long thin boards, short in height, that stick up from the motherboard at a 90-degree angle.
  • Pull out, and then press down on the holding clips that retain the memory modules. The memory modules should rise up slightly out of the socket.
  • Pull out the memory and clean the golden strip with eraser and re insert and turn on the computer
