Ran HP diagnostic test, got the following: LBA value 287849. Failed Smart short self test [HD521-2W]. Could someone kindly tell me what is wrong and how do i go about rectifying the problem? Thanks in advance

You can look for a possible hard drive firmware update for your drive or perhaps the diagnostic tool is giving you a "false positive" result.
The hard drive failed the diagnostic test. If you can boot Windows then try the following:
- From the RUN window enter: chkdsk
- Open my Computer and right mouse click on the hard drive --> properties --> Tools --> Check now (complete surface analysis)
Otherwise try a complete reformat or replace the hard drive. I hope that you have the HP Recovery Disks and that your data is backed up.

If your system is unbootable you can try this method to copy your important data to an external USB drive, this will only work if the hard drive has not completely failed.
