Remove front cover on Compaq Presario 7470 Desktop

This should be very simple but its not.  I inherited an old Compaq Presario 7470 Desktop computer (Model # 163881-004) and want to replace the CD rom drive with a DVD drive.  I have been working on home PC's for 10 years and have never seen one yet that I couldn't open up -- until now.  There does not seen to be any release mechanism on the front panel, which is what I am trying to remove.  I called the HP help desk and the guy I talked could not find any info because of the age of the computer.  He suggested I try this site.  Thanks in advance, GF.

Re: Remove front cover on Compaq Presario 7470 Desktop

Thanks for the link but it's not that simple.  This case has a large plastic faceplate that covers the metal three-sided, one-piece cover (so there is no removable "side-cover", unfortunately).  So until I get the large plastic faceplate off (and I'd rather not break it), I cannot remove the metal one-piece three-sided cover.  Maybe someone else has one of these old computers

Re: Remove front cover on Compaq Presario 7470 Desktop

Thanks for both replys and all the links but still no go.  The links that have been previously sent to me and the other person were all for cases that have SIDE panels.  The best way I can describe my case is that the front plastic faceplate or panel should snap in place (this is the way that the 4 other PC cases that have a one piece metal case work) and then the case slided back from the front to the back in one piece until it is free of the guides and then it just lifts off in one piece.  The links that were sent to me all had two separate side panels that are held in place with thumb screws (which I wish to God this case had).  Anyway I cannot find any way of snapping the front plastic panel off and there are no releases that I can find either.  The actual model number of this Compaq computer is 163881-004.  I even called the HP / Compaq support line but could not get any help.  I will search for a manual for this thing, surely there must be one online somewhere.  GF.

Re: Remove front cover on Compaq Presario 7470 Desktop

Finally figured it out with a little brute force.  It actually has 6 tabs, three on each side on front panel.  After that the back had three screws that had to be removed.  Thanks all that posted.  GF.

Re: Remove front cover on Compaq Presario 7470 Desktop

I know this is an old post, but just thought I'd mention this as i had trouble with one of these that came in for repair too.

There are 3 torx/blade screws at the rear of the case. 1 on either side near the top of the case, and 1 at the bottom, below the expansion ports.

Undo these screws, then grip onto the "L" shaped folded steel bracket that's part of the chassis, and give it a good pull. The inner chassis will come free of the exterior casing. No need to remove those front clips at all.

Hope this helps any someone that comes across this
