Replacement for Samsung SCSI Hard Disk HD642JJ

Pavillion desktop (from 2008)
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I suspect that my 640 GB hard disk (from 2008) is nearing the end of its life and would like to plan for a replacement.

There does not appear to be much if any chance to replace such a SCSI disk any more.

What is the best type of disk to replace it, and does it need a new controller?

I run Vista (original OS) and Windows 7 (new) in a dual boot configuration.

It has currently three volumes, a Vista C: drive (c.300 GB), a Windows 7 C: drive (c.300 GB) and the HP "FACTORY_IMAGE" drive 15 GB

@PeterSmith427,

Just to clarify, the term SCSI is actually not correct with modern computers.   Your HP a6652de  has a SATA hard drive.  SCSI was used in the early 1980's, and used a 50-pin flat ribbon connector. Drives could be daisy-chained onto a single data port.  SATA only allows 1 drive per port.

Both Seagate and WD have a free disk cloning software called Disk Wizard.  You need an appropriate SATA internal hard drive, capacity of 640GB minimum, and for easy cloning, no more than 2TB.  IMHO, I like 1TB Seagate ST1000DM003 1TB drives. Although these drives are SATA600, you'll still gain from the 64mb cache.

I use Acronis True Image for backups so cloning my main disk is not a problem.

I was tempted to switch to using a SSD for the Windows 7 c: drive (currently using only 55 gb out of a partition of 292 gb) but if I could not chain both the current 640 gb replacement (for the Vista c: drive, plus the HP FACTORY_IMAGE partition) and a SSD, then this idea would have to be scrapped.

What you write (my hard disk is not a SCSI drive) makes sense, but I am curious as to why, for example, when I run the HP System Information program, it clearly says my hard disk is a:

SAMSUNG HD642JJ SCSI Disk Device

If is is not a SCSI drive what is the point of the misinformation?

@PeterSmith427,

If you have an unused SATA port on the moterboard, it could be used for a separate drive.  As for the SCSI term, it's a hold-over from the interface controller.
