Product: EliteDesk 800 G2
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have the EliteDesk 800 PC running our company machine software in a  RAID1 with 2 x 256GB Solid Sate HDD.

I am wanting to upgrade our company software that runs across the drives.

 

I am hopeing to break the RAID and disconnect the slave ( as a backup), perform the upgrade and make sure this works first.

 

If sucessfull, can i just reconnect the slave, establish the RAID and the slave drive is rebuilt ?

 

If unsucessful, can I just connect the slave as the Master, the old master to the slave , establish the RAID and the system will go back to initial setup ( before upgrade)

There is too much "risk" in the above procedure for my personal preference.

 

Why not just purchase an internal disk-drive (more than 256 GB), and "clone" from your production array onto the new drive.  Production outage time: less than 60 minutes -- less if both "source" and "target" are SSD.

 

Install the new disk-drive onto a "spare" computer.

You do have a "spare" computer, ready to deploy should you have a hardware problem on the production server?

If not, you should!

 

Then, do the upgrades on the new disk-drive, and test the upgraded software.

 

If successful, "clone" back from the new drive onto the RAID array.  Production outage time: less than 60 minutes.

 

P.S. How old are the current disk-drives?  Out of warranty?  Should they be "proactively" replaced before they fail?
