I have had my HP a1230n desktop for 3.5 years.
I have never burned a CD or DVD with the DVD-R drive which came with the desktop.
I never even tried. Recently I purchased an album on iTunes and wanted to burn a CD of the album.
So, my first attempt in 3.5 years to burn a disc failed.
The device ejects and spins discs but cannot read anything or burn anything.
The model is TSST corp CD/DVDW TS-H552L and i cannot find any updated drivers [for free] on the net.
If the laser is dirty will the device manager indicate so or will it still say that the device is working properly?

Well, it seems others are having a similar problem. See here:
With DVD writers so inexpensive, it is just not worth the trouble messing with a unco-operative drive. Get a new Samsung writer. I think your unit can use either IDE or SATA drives. See what port your old one used and replace the DVD drive.

i would first try a disc cleaner made for those dvd player and burners
hope that works
and if that does not work
check for the burner software update
if all fails replace the disc drive
they are not expensive to replace
prices are resonable now
good points or advice..
Aslo if the questions or issues solved please check it
