UEFI vs Lagecy boot order

Hello,

Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.

>UEFI <is the new BIOS.

I think you talk about >Secure boot< and Legacy Mode.

Please, note that no matter the UEFI mode, Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 work on their own way to certain extent (to say it so). They include techology called Fast Start which will boot your machine to Desktop in a faster manner than it was in Windows 7 (for example) but this might for example also prevent you from booting an external media.

If you want Legacy mode, please:

1) enable this via the UEFI/BIOS

2) in Windows, disable Fast Startup as listed here:

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4189-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-10-a.html

3) restart computer

UEFI vs Lagecy boot order

IT WILL BE SO KIND IF SOMEBODY ANSWER THIS

THANK YOU

thank you for replying

NO; it is not the windows  fault; i think it is hp UEFI's fault

->there is no ubuntu boot in uefi options; only OS boot manager and OS boot is assumed to be default as windows 8/10 by hp (why??).

->even if you enable legacy boot order HP laptop always gives preferance to uefi  over legacy so no piont in enabling Lagecy boot order

can you please tell me wheather I can make Legacy boot order default and Lagecy boot order as preferance 1?

P.S. I can boot in ubuntu by pressing f9 during boot and then select 2nd entry which is ubuntu(first entry is OS boot manager. can you please tell me how can I move OS Boot manager entry 2nd and ubuntu entry as first. entry must change in when I press F9 during boot and change boot order screen comes.?

P.S. I have already fast startup disabled and secure boot disabled.hp-envy-secure-boot.jpg

UEFI vs Lagecy boot order

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

I didn't assume you talk about GNU/Linux-based OS. In this case, the situation is somewhat different.

Well, as you know we live in a Windows-based world (when it comes to personal computers) and most computers are designed with Microsoft and Windows in mind. That is why we (Linux users - I also use Linux-based OS on my personal computer) might come accross certian obstacles.

I don't have experience with your computer model but I made some research and I found some articles - their steps may help you make GRUB default one (not OS boot loader). As you probably know, GRUB is the Linux (Ubuntu) default boot loaded and if it is default you will be able to control with it what boots first and it will control the OS boot/choice/etc...  :

Here is some general info you may find useful:

Read the steps , follow the instruction carefully. Back-up your most important data on external media prior to the changes (manual back-up or full image using Clonezilla for example).

Please, report back if this helps.
