USB ports on side of w2207h monitor

I have connected the USB ports on the side of my w2207h monitor, but I get an error message saying that the USB device has malfunctioned and is not recognized by Windows every time I boot up my computer.  Is there any way to get the USB ports on the side of the monitor to work?

Excellent reply. Delete the "Unknown Device". Then reboot.  That sound clean up the error.

It is important to always use "safely remove hardware", found in the system tray, to select the USB device your unplugging. Just pulling the cable will cause this error.

Hanspuppa removed her reply caused she said it was an issue with the monitor driver. We all make errors, it's human. But it's sort of silly to strike out the reply cause you made a simple error. Not putting her down, but a blank reply is worse than facing up to it.

Re: USB ports on side of w2207h monitor

The w2207h monitor has 2 USB ports on the side. It utilizes a standard USB cable to complete the hub. The cable plugs from the rear of the CPU to the monitor. Physically it adds convenience of 2 USB ports at the monitor, using up 1 of the CPU's rear USB ports.

I would suggest you check Device Drivers, and see if any "yellow or red" flags appear. The driver package for the monitor makes no reference to USB drivers.

Re: USB ports on side of w2207h monitor

Thank you for your response.  I have reinstalled the drivers both from the disk and from the HP website, with no effect.

Re: USB ports on side of w2207h monitor

wb2001:  Thanks for your response.  I get a yellow flag in the Device Manager list and the message:

"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

The list describes the device as "Unknown Device."  It gives the Device Type as "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and the Manufacturer as "Standard USB Host Controller."  It gives its location as "Port_#0003.Hub_#0009."

When I attach an Ipod Nano to one of the ports, its screen comes on briefly, then goes off.  It does not appear to be recharging the Ipod.  When I attach a thumb drive to the port, its light comes on briefly, then goes off.  This leads me to believe that the cable is not at fault.

Plugging in Message.pngI tried the delete and reset, it did not work. Nothing works. Is there a special driver that I need to make it work? I have gone through several forums. I have reinstalled the monitor drivers and downloaded the latest ones. What else? Give up?

It is important that you delete the item, and perform a total power down. Not a restart. Also, have nothing plugged in to the port, so that means unplugging the USB cable feeding the monitor.
