USB ports stopped working on Windows 7

HP Recommended

I recently upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 on my m8167c Desktop PC and everything was going great until all my Usb ports stopped working. Now i can't use my usb keyboard and usb router for the internet. Im not sure what to do now. I've tried looking for drivers but no luck.

To resolve the problem, I suggest you install the chipset drivers:
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/18052/a08/infinst911_autol.exe

If the issue persists, download the hotfix 976972:
http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?autocom=downloads&req=download&code=do_download&id=11296

Order of operations if ALL of the ports have failed.

Remove all USB devices from ports (except keyboard).

Fully shut down computer, wait 5 seconds, and then restart.

Do USB ports work?

if not...

Did the USB ports ever work in Windows 7 before - that is, right after you upgraded?

If yes, then USB references are probably screwed up in the registry hives. Use Microsoft System Restore to go back to a time when you know it was working properly. Might want to take note of the Windows Updates that were delivered around the time USB was knocked out. If a Windows Update knocked it out, you can block that update from being delivered from the Windows Update page.

If USB never worked in Windows 7, try updating the P965 chipset http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-022768.htm

I have a problem with usb ports also but on my Pavilion m9153.sc

If i connect any USB  storage device, then my USB ports stop working.

While USB mouse and keyboard work fine.. the problem occurs when i connect a USB flash drive (for example a sandisc 4 gb) or an external Hard Drive

that is when it fails to install drivers and stops working.

I have tried reinstalling windows7 but it didn't help at all, i have also installed all the windows updates and i have been looking for BIOS update on HP support but there's only vista updates.. and there's no BIOS update at all.. does anyone have a solution for this?

aqua09, you mentioned that it failed to install the drivers can you try

A. see if there is a C:\Windows\inf\usbstor.inf file present?

if not get it from another Win 7 system (make sure you get the right one 32 vs 64-bit version copied to this folder

B. rename autorun.inf on the thumb drive to autorun.temp

See if that works.
