Windows XP Prof - Product activation failed (locked)

I bought a HP Pavilion A1000, system number RK558AA on 1/3/2007 using XP prof – the motherboard died recently. I obtained a working HP Compaq DC7100 and installed the drive from the Pavilion. After power-on Windows requested activation which failed because license is locked (I was told on the phone). I have the original “Proof of license” that shows a product key. How can I resolve this problem?

Hi,

Review this article on how to activate XP. You need to use a valid XP license key that matches up with the XP version that you are using.

Support for XP ends April 8, 2014.

Re: Windows XP Prof - Product activation failed (locked)

This does NOT help because I was told over the phone that the lisence is locked.  I don't know why but I know that the system was verified valid before the motherboard died.

Re: Windows XP Prof - Product activation failed (locked)

Hi,

Get back on the phone and ask why the license is locked and ask for a recommendation.

When you say the original “Proof of license” are you referring to the COA w/license key attached to side or top of tower? If it is an OEM version  -can't be moved to another machine.

Re: Windows XP Prof - Product activation failed (locked)

Check the COA -if it has OEM on it- can't be moved to another machine.

Re: Windows XP Prof - Product activation failed (locked)

Does the dc7100 not have a COA attached to it?

Re: Windows XP Prof - Product activation failed (locked)

I haven't seen one. It has a HDD with XP Pro but I wanted to use my former HDD to preserve installed software
