Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
Hi,

I've a client with a z440 Xeon E5-1603v3 CPU. The application he's running is very CPU-demanding. What upgrade options will work in his machine. I know E5-16xxv3 will work. But the price of a E5-1680v3 is quite disturbing. Seen some E5-2650Lv3 for good price level.

@LemonSWE, welcome to the forum.

 

Here is the Maintenance and Service Guide for the workstation.  On Page 16 you will find the compatible processors (Support for the Intel Xeon Processor E5-1600 Series and E5-2600 Series) for it.  The Guide has all of the pertinent information that you will need.

The way that has been phrased is very misleading. A E5-1650 v1 and v2 are also E5-1600 series CPU's but would obviously not fit due to a different socket. It would be much better to check in the quick specs what the CPU's used by HP are.

My question is - can you use a v4 Xeon in any Z440 or is there a boot block date type issue as there was with the Zx20, where the newer 'tock' CPU's would only work on the later revision / release machines?

I second this question and would also like to know if it is possible to pop in 2400 Mhz memory modules if let´s say replacing a E5-1650v3 with a E5-1650v4 in let´s say a Z440 #G1X59EA?

@MtothaJ, @Z440Roger, all of HP's motherboards are made to their specs.  They list all of the processors and memory that have been tested to assure that they are compatible with the motherboards.  If the processor or memory is not listed in the specs it may or may not work,  However, if you choose to try it HP doesn't support it and there is no guaranty that it will work.

At least in the case of the Zx20 range the HP quick specs do not differentiate between a v1 machine capable of only running v1 CPU's and v2 machine capable of running both v1 and v2 cpu's. 

The same seems to apply to Zx40 - newer quickspecs also includes v4 processors - will these work on a machine which originally came with a v3 CPU?
