Presume you mean the HP probook 645 G1.  What version of Windows are you using?

Does CD/DVD drive appear in Device Manager and is there a yellow exclamation mark or red X?

Look at the diagram, page 12 of the Manual for the placement of the Drive and the Eject button.

thank you for the reply.  my drive/tray does not have an eject button (manual says eject button is on "select models only")

HP Recommended

yes, that is the correct model.  running Win7 Pro 32bit

Does it appear in Device Manager?

Double click My Computer, does the DVD drive appear, if so, right click then eject.

Is there any "Unknown" device showing in Device Manager?

Clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type System Information, and then, in the list of results, click System Information. Does it show?

If it does not appear anywhere then the model you have did not come with a DVD drive or it has disconnected itself.

Did you just get this computer?

no, no unknown devices, and the ODD does not show up anywhere.  yes, i just got the computer.  there is what appears to be a disc tray, but no eject button.  according to the specs, it was to have a dvd drive.

i took the back panel off the machine.  it *looks* like there is a drive in there, but not sure.

I do not know where  you got the computer from but maybe this is a question you should ask them whether there was one installed or not.  If yes and still under warranty then they should fix it.
