cpu working 100%

Hi,I have a problem with HP ProBook 4740s...I find out that my processor is working 100% and i'm worried that it could be a virus or something (my Windows Defender is working all the time)...While i was posting this,my notebook started to accelerate...Please help me I just bought laptop,and I don't want to lose it after a few weeks working! Smiley Sad

Have you installed third party security software? What version of Windows are you using?


You may have more than one Anti-Virus (A-V) resident scanner running. If you are using other A-V software you should turn off Windows Defender.

Hey,I'm the same user...I'm using Windows 8.1 and I don't have another anti-virus...I don't understand that first question that u asked me...Sorry,I dunno that my Englich is good,I'm Serbian Smiley Happy

Third party software would be another A-V program such as Norton, or Eset, Trend Micro, or Kaspersky.


Windows Defender processes in Task Manager are as follows:






Disconnect from the Internet, Open Control Panel - Windows Defender- and temporarily turn off Windows Defender.


Check CPU usage. Has CPU usage normalized? At idle your CPU utilization should be one to two percent.


Reboot your PC then turn on Windows Defender. Check if CPU usage at idle maintains a one to two percent utilization level.


If your CPU is still in overdrive you may consider replacing Windows Defender with one of the free A-V programs available for home use.
