high rate of motherboard failures in the M2N78-LA (violet6) motherboards

I have done some research on my computer.  It seems there is a high rate of failures with the M2N7B-LA motherboards.  How do I get it replaced?

The Vostro 220 series is a Dell computer based on the Intel G45 chipset supporting Intel Core™2 Duo, Celeron®, and Pentium® processors. If you have a Dell computer please contact Dell or use their forums/KB Faqs.

If you have a HP computer with the M2N78-LA (Violet, Viola, Violet3, or Violet6) motherboard, please post the full HP model name and/or product number of the computer in question. This information allows us to determine what options you may have in resolving your concern.

Please send KUDOs

I stand corrected.  I am using the vostro now.  Not sure why I posted that the moatherboard was from a dell.

The computer the motherboard came from is a Pavilion a4316f and it has the M2N78-LA (violet6) motherboard in it.  While I was researching a replacement motherboard I noticed  aLOT of posts out there about the high failure rate of this motherboard.  Most fingers are pointing to the nvidia controler chip as the cause.

Mark,

Here are the original factory specs for your HP Pavilion a4316f Desktop Computer. According to the specs, this model was released for sale on or around 07-Dec-2009. Depending on when you purchased your a4316f and if you got an extended warranty, you may be able to request warranty service to remedy your issue.  If you didn't ge tan extended warranty and the system is over a year old, you may have no recourse.

FYI, I have a HP Pavilion p6320y Desktop Computer that uses the same M2N78-LA (Violet6) motherboard. This computer has worked flawlessly since I bought it in early 2010. The wife and kids use it everyday for games, email, Excel, Word, web browsing, etc.

I am glad that yours is still going strong. Did you by chance do a quick Google of the failure rate of this motherboard? I found one site that was talking about a class action suit. I really don't think that is the way to go. It would be better if HP did the right thing and repair the faulty motherboards. But if they hide their heads and hope this goes away. Then yes a class action suit would be the way to go.

Burgus,

I do believe the initial reports of the problem were posted as early as Aug 2010. (Your 3rd reference). It was more than a year (Nov 2011)  when I gleaned the listing of model # from that initial posting, and posted the results.

The problem is not the physical motherboard, IMHO, but the particular batch of NVidia chip's. Otherwise, how could individual models exhibit both good/no-good characteristics.

Yes, the a4316f is on the list of problematic units. Was that your question?
