opening corrupted document files in word - Windows

HP Recommended

I have personal document files that I cannot open.  I get the following error message: "This file is unable to run because of missing or corrupted files.  Contact your computer manufacturer."  What do I need to do to correct this?  How in the world do I contact my manufacturer other than through HP Support?  My operating system is Windows 7.

@Josie6

The issue might be buried within the document itself.  The document might be responding to an inconsistency (or incompatability) in the template used to control document features (Normal.dotm).
