p6505f Power supply upgrade

HP Recommended
H/P Pavilion p6505f
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a Pavilion p6505f.  It came with a 250 watt power supply.  The power supply has a 20 pin male plug. The mother board has a 24 pin female plug. I installed a 400 watt power supply that has 24 pins. Can I use all 24 pins from the new power supply or should I just use the 20 pin portion of the 24 pin male plug?

Thanks

@Endmill,

Just use the 20 pin and let pins 21-24 dangle. Here is an article on the plug.

You do not need that added power.

 Thanks for the responce. I guess what I am asking is, Will i cause any problems if I plug in the extra 4 piins. I added a new Radeon R7 240 video card and I want to get all of the performance that I can get out of my computer.

Thanks

@Endmill,

Interesting statements.  The p6505f is a circa 2010 machine, with BIOS (commonly called Legacy).   The r7 240 was released in 2013, and would have UEFI VBIOS, which unless the card has a Hybrid dual BIOS, would not work with your unit.

BTW, pins 21-23 are +5V.  Pin 24 is Ground.

The video card works great with the 400 watt power supply.  It runs my 55 inch Visio 3D TV smoothly. I use 3D graphic software.

I would appreciate if anyone can please tell me, if I will damage my motherboard / computer by plugging in the 4 extra pins. I am trying to get the most performance that is available to me.

Thanks
