You said there was no COA sticker -- that's probably because this PC comes in several different versions, some with Win8.1 or Win10 preinstalled -- and in those cases, there would be no COA sticker, but instead, the product key would be embedded into the UEFI firmware on the motherboard.

 

It is also likely that your friend replaced the HP OEM version of Win8.1 with a hacked version of Win7 -- which would produce the "invalid key" error message.

 

IF you force the PC back to Win7, you will have that problem again (presuming this is a Win8.1 PC) -- as the license embedded in the PC will not work with Win7.

 

But, it will work with Win10 -- and HP does supply Win 10 drivers for this PC.  So, I would have to agree with the others regarding Win10 -- as it appears to be your best all around choice.
