won't boot w/most cards in middle PCI slot

[ Edited ]

Only one of my PCI cards works in the middle, "PCI2", slot of my Presario SR1913WM motherboard

If I put one of my two eSATA cards, or my SATA card, in that slot and turn on the computer, nothing happens (silence and black screen from any video port).  (Regardless of whether the PCIe slot is used.  I can live with this, I'm just curious...)  Any theories, please?

And perhaps this is unrelated, but I found years ago that the system wouldn't boot (I forget the specifics) with a 4th stick of RAM.  (So I've always used three 1GB sticks; hmmm...maybe I'll try again to solve this: do I need to buy sticks in pairs for this mobo?)

I'm using the most-current BIOS firmware (3.11).  RAM is errorless (per Memtest 86+ and Windows Memory Diagnostic).  SR1913WM specs.
